This 2-Word Question Will Completely Change How You Write Your Instagram Captions

BlogThey say a picture speaks 1,000 words. But on Instagram, words matter too.

Sure, Instagram is primarily a visual platform, so having beautiful, eye-catching photos or videos is absolutely a must. But having the right caption for your post can make or break how successful it is.

There are lots of important steps you can take to write strong Instagram captions that help you grow your profile and reach your goals, whether it’s selling items, establishing yourself as an influencer, promoting your content, showcasing your brand, or more.

Today, we’d like to draw your attention to one simple two-word phrase -- just one question -- that can utterly transform how you write your captions.

So What?

Writing killer captions for your Instagram posts requires you to step into your audience’s shoes and look at things from their perspective. Imagine your followers are like a surly younger brother or sister who keep asking the same question over and over: “So what?”

The “So What?” question is all about looking at the bigger picture. It means thinking beyond just the photo and describing what’s in it.

Writing an awesome Instagram caption depends on thinking not just about what you’re posting, but why you’re posting it.

It means asking:

  • Why does this matter to me? Why does it matter to my audience?
  • What’s in it for them? How will it benefit them?
  • What impact will it have?
  • Why should someone care?
  • Why is this worth posting or reading or sharing?
  • What’s the point?
  • What do you want your followers to feel?

So... What Does It Look Like?

Here are a couple examples of top influencers who have nailed the “So What?” question in their captions. They have different industries, different brands, and different voices, but they all write audience-focused captions that inspire their followers.

It’s one thing to share that you had an amazing night, but why should anyone else care? Olympic athlete turned influencer Nastia Liukin spotlights her partnership with Proctor & Gamble by sharing the “so what?” -- how it made her feel, and how it could make her followers feel -- getting “goodness vibes” and asking people to ask what good they can do in the world.

A caption doesn’t have to be long to be powerful. Fitness influencer Kenneth Gallarzo shared a post about a group workout that answers the “So what?” question -- it’s not just a workout, it’s about being in a team and achieving more, together. His quote-based caption inspires his followers to join him.

Tanesha Awasthi has a partnership with Walmart. She successfully shares a caption about back-to-school shopping that has a very clear answer to “So what?” -- she gets her followers to think about whether they’ve done their own shopping yet, and how it can benefit them to get everything they need quickly all in one place.

So... Go Get Started!

A lot of elements go into powerful Instagram captions, but if you start asking yourself “So what?” every time you write one, you’ll become more effective at reaching your social media goals.
