5 Rising YouTube Video Trends to Try Out in 2022

jan 31 (1)Wondering what the next YouTube video you create should be about?

Now that 2022 is here, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a look at what’s been trending on YouTube right now and mine those trends for ideas.

Whether you’re an influencer, content creator, or small business, it’s always good to keep your finger on the pulse of rising trends. When you see a trend, you can either hop on and ride the wave to glory, or you can find ways to differentiate yourself while still being fresh and relevant. Either way, staying on top of trends is crucial for growing your audience and building your followers.

Here’s our quick take on 5 trends that we’ll see rise to new heights on YouTube in 2022.

1. Short Is the New Long

YouTube remains distinct from other social media video platforms because its videos tend to be on the longer side. At the same time, the trend of the short-form video (epitomized by TikTok’s 60-second viral clips) has officially made its way to YouTube now too. YouTube Shorts, their TikTok competitor, just launched in the United States with 1-minute long vertical videos in a swipe interface. Quick, easily digestible content bites will definitely remain irresistible to millions of viewers in 2022.

2. Livestreaming and Interactive Content

It’s probably no surprise that in the COVID era, livestreaming videos has exploded, since so many formerly in-person events shifted to a virtual format. According to YouTube’s most recent Trends report, daily livestreams have grown by more than 45%, and 56% of people agree that livestreams can be just as good as being at an event in person. Livestreaming isn’t just for events, either — a lot of influencers are moving to incorporate live videos as a way to directly interact with and engage their audience.

3. Mixing Up Genres in Creative Ways

Traditionally, YouTube videos have fallen pretty naturally into certain categories depending on their topic, whether it be cat videos or business advice or cooking, etc. A rising trend is breaking the barriers and combining topics and genres in new creative ways, such as a beauty blogger combining makeup tips with true crime murder stories. YouTube reports that 47% of surveyed users agreed their favorite online creators can be difficult to categorize into one genre. It’s time to mix things up!

4. Explainers and How-To Videos

More than ever before, YouTube is the source people turn to when they want to learn new skills. From the popularity of advice channels like “Dad, How Do I…” to niche influencers like Chickenlandia (who teaches you how to raise your own chickens), content creators will find an audience hungry for practical, hands-on knowledge. YouTube reported last year that  82% of users have used YouTube to learn how to do things themselves. And a recent marketing study found that more viewers want to see DIY, explainer, and how-to videos from brands.

5. Nostalgia

Remember the good ol’ days? No? Well, a video might help you capture the magic of days gone by. Nostalgic videos about previous decades and times of life will continue to be a trend in 2022. This is partly because YouTube’s fastest growing demographics are people from the baby boomer and Gen X generations. Nostalgia marketing in particular has been rising for a while, and the pandemic influenced it further at a time when many viewers were looking for a happy escape from the struggles of the current day.
