When a Text Message Can Literally Save Your Life

A victim of domestic violence with her abuser in the same room with her. A deaf couple stranded in a lake when their motor-boat dies. A scared, lonely, and depressed teen with no one they feel they can talk to.

Imagine how much worse all these situations would be without one simple thing: the ability to send a text message.

When we think about text messages, usually it’s messaging with friends or family, or maybe texts from our favorite businesses or influencers.

We all know that texts have become more and more a part of our life over the years. But in some cases, they’re not just a part of our life. They’re literally a communication that can save our life.

Here are some fundamental life-saving resources that you should know about, although we hope you’ll never need them. Texting these numbers could make all the difference between life and death.

1. When You’re in an Emergency Situation and Can’t Talk: 9-1-1

Here in the U.S. we all know that 9-1-1 is the number to call in an emergency. Calling is always best, since you’ll be able to quickly interact with a dispatcher who can ask you questions and connect you to the emergency services you need as soon as possible.

But in almost every state, texting 9-1-1 is an incredibly valuable option too. Texting 9-1-1 can send help to those with hearing or speech disabilities. It can also help people who are unable to talk due to a medical emergency or who can’t safely talk on the phone. Scary but real-life situations where texting 9-1-1 saved lives have included incidents of a home invasion, abduction, domestic violence, or an active shooter.

Authorities are clear that texting should be a last resort, and that if you text 9-1-1, you should give as much information as possible about your location, the situation, and your status.

2. When You’re in a Dark Place and Not Sure Where Else to Turn: Text HOME to 741-741

But what if, for some reason, you aren’t able to call for assistance? Luckily, many roadside assistance programs offer texting as an option to request help, in addition to mobile apps. For example, if you are a AAA member, you can text HELP to 800-AAA-HELP.

Check with your auto insurance company or other roadside assistance program to find out whether and how you can send texts for roadside assistance. It could very well save your life
