5 Quick Tips to Grow Your YouTube Video Audience Today

art 17 (2)

Have you ever thought about how amazing it is that more than 1 billion people watch something on YouTube every month? 1 billion people. And yet meanwhile, your own videos have…well, probably a lot less than 1 billion views. (Unless somehow you are one of the people who uploaded the Baby Shark Dance… in which case, wait, why are you reading this article?)

Getting more people to view your videos — also known as growing your YouTube audience — is understandably a top goal for many influencers, content creators, artists, and small businesses. Here are a few super-quick tips that can help more of your desired audience discover and devour your content.

1. Find out what’s already working for you, and do more of it.

Put on your data-nerd hat and spend some time deep-diving in your YouTube analytics data Seriously, plunge into those numbers like you’re Scrooge McDuck diving into his vault of gold coins. Really get to know which of your videos are performing best in various areas. Figure out what they have in common, and then incorporate or target those elements in your future videos. For example, did your best videos use certain keywords? Or did they perform better among certain demographics?

2. Experiment with some new video formats.

This is (intentionally) pretty much the opposite advice as we put above in #1. It’s important to be aware that the kinds of videos that resonate with your audience aren’t always going to be the same. Even if you’ve had success with certain types of videos or video formats in the past, novelty has lots of appeal too. It could be time to try other formats. Learn about and follow the current video trends and see how you can incorporate them into what you’re doing. For example, have you tried a short-format video yet to see what happens?

3. Become an optimization master.

The truth is, you’re never going to maximize your YouTube potential until you learn how to optimize your video and channels. Optimization is all about making your videos (1) easier to find in searches and sidebars, and (2) more tempting to click on. The first part is all about learning how to find and strategically use the best keywords for your content and audience. The second part is all about writing compelling titles, creating great thumbnails, and writing good descriptions that reel your viewers in. You can learn more about all these topics in our recent article, How to Optimize and Promote Your YouTube Videos to Get More Views

4. Look for an audience that’s hungrier for content.

A lot of tips for growing an audience relate to how to get more of your desired audience to find your videos and come to you. But of course, this is YouTube. You’re operating in an oversaturated content world where over 400 hours of videos are uploaded every minute. Luckily there’s another way to think about it too — what if you could identify an audience that wants more content, and come to them? Consider identifying micro audiences and niches and how you might appeal to them. You can find ideas by browsing the search results for both popular and also less competitive search terms. Think about your interests and potential audience communities and look for topics and areas that have less content to compete with. Almost every topic can be narrowed down further — sometimes with great success!

5. Merge your audience with someone else’s through collaborations.

You want to grow your audience, right? Well, you can count on one thing: you’re not the only one. There are countless other creators and other channels out there with the same goal. Why not team up once in a while with a compatible channel and see what happens? Collabs between creators are popular because they can be very successful at encouraging one creator’s audience to tune into the other creator’s channel and vice versa. If you’re not sure where to begin here, YouTube’s Creator Academy has a free bootcamp class about how to find a partner and create a collaboration with someone.

Of course, there are tons of other strategies that you can try to grow your audience too, like running contests or promotions, funneling in viewers from other social media channels, using playlists, and more. As long as you keep creating overall, and focus on improving your optimization and promotion skills, you will see growth. Good luck!
